31 37-45, Mar, 1993A few hundred batteries are employed to supply electricity to an experimental apparatus borne on a balloon. It is important to keep the batteries under good quality control. To facilitate such control, a modular architecture has been introduced to the organization of the batteries and the structure of the electronic system in the apparatus. The system comprises subsystems called modules. Electricity is supplied to each module by floating power supplies made from a dedicated portion of the batteries. The modules are electrically isolated individually. A local network is employed to enhance the modularity of the system. The modules communicate through a single twisted-pair cable, a party-line bus to which the modules are connected through isolation transformers.

23 127-136, Mar, 1989We are preparing a series of balloon-borne experiments to search for anti-protons and anti-matter of cosmic origin. The thin model solenoid for the ASTROMAG project will be equipped with a cylindrical jet chamber resulting to a large solid angle of 1m^2 sr. Anti-helium will then be searched for to a flux level of 10^<-8> relative to the helium. Simultaneously, we can perform a very sensitive search for GeV γ-rays from point-sources. The energy spectra of the positrons and of various isotopes can be measured over a wide energy range. The detectors are now under construction. A prototype detector was launched from Sanriku in June 1988 and the total system worked as expected.
