Icarus, 456 117135-117135, Sep, 2026The presence of water on the Moon and on asteroids that are thought to be poor in water, either because they formed inside the snow line or because they lost much of their water during differentiation, has been suggested by multiple studies; however, its form and origin remain unclear. In this study, we conducted hypervelocity impact experiments between serpentinite projectiles and steel targets. Serpentinite contains hydroxyl and simulates hydrated impactors such as primitive asteroids. The effects of impact velocity and angle on the survival and form of water delivered to the target surface were investigated using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy and microscopic Raman spectroscopy. Reflectance spectra of projectile materials adhered to the crater surfaces suggested that, in all head-on impact experiments with velocities of 3─7 km s−1, hydroxyl pre-existing in the projectile was almost completely lost. The spectra also showed olivine absorption features at shock pressures exceeding ∼80 GPa, and the olivine Raman peaks became narrower at higher impact velocities. Based on the comparisons with results from impact experiments with anhydrous projectiles, it is suggested that molecular water can be trapped in the melt at shock pressures below ∼100 GPa. In contrast, in the oblique impact experiments conducted in this study, decomposition of projectile material was suppressed, and hydroxyl was detected in crater samples. The current results, along with comparisons to impact velocities of asteroids in the main belt and on the Moon, suggest that molecular water derived from hydrated impactors can be detectable through spectroscopic observations....

Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Jul, 2026Large main-belt asteroids with visible geometric albedos below 0.1 are predominantly classified within the C- and X-complex spectroscopic classes. C-type and dark X-type asteroids typically exhibit flat to slightly negative and positive spectral slopes, respectively. They are further distinguished by the presence (for C-types) or absence (for dark X-types) of a shallow absorption feature near 1.0-1.3 μm. We serendipitously discovered that the asteroids 1093 Freda and 1390 Abastumani display spectral characteristics intermediate between these two classes, combining a positive visible-to-near-infrared spectral slope with a shallow absorption band. A search in the literature reveals additional asteroids with similar properties. The existence of such objects, spanning a continuum of spectral shapes between C- and dark X-types, may point to a common genetic origin. Their spectral behavior could be explained by the presence of cronstedtite, an Fe-rich serpentine, on their surfaces....

Abstracts for fall meeting of the Japanese Society for Planetary Science, 2007 14-14, 2007Hayabusa 2 is an asteroid sample return mission following Hayabusa mission. This mission is now under study and mission target is c-type asteroid 1999JU3. From summer 2007 to April 2008 the observation from the earth is favorable conditions. This chance of observation is the first in 8 years from discovery. About 1999JU3 we had known only spectral type until now so we had observed lightcurve of it in July 2007. As a result we have found that its rotational period is about under 6 hours. This time, we will report about information of 1999JU3 we had get until now for example the result of lightcurve from July to September and about the result of AKARI in May and so on.

Abstracts for fall meeting of the Japanese Society for Planetary Science, 2006 104-104, 2006Silica aerogel has been used as a suitable capture medium for solid microparticles with hypervelocity. The authors have been conducting experiments for evaluation of thermal alteration of particles captured by silica aerogel and energy partition. In this study, formation of penetration tracks in aerogel was observed and recorded by a high-speed camera. Excavation process of a single track, so-called a "carrot track" made by a 500 micron-Al2O3 grain was observed. At first a thin track grew in the direction of penetration and then it started to swell into a "carrot". Assuming that brighter part represents higher temperature/pressure area, shock wave dissipation in aerogel can be recognized. Combining this and our previous results, this study aims at finding empirical facts constraining energy partition.

Abstracts for fall meeting of the Japanese Society for Planetary Science, 2006 79-79, 2006As a post-Hayabusa mission in 2010's, our working group has been developing a new sampling system for C-type and other primitive asteroid surface and sub-surface materials, based upon technology and operation established and lessons learned by Hayabusa's touch-and-go sampling attempt at the S-type asteroid Itokawa in 2005. Both impact sampling with corer projectiles and a microgravity tether retraction system are under the development as well as shaped charge excavation on free asteroidal surface. This study summarizes results of those endeavors and future prospects of this challenge.

Abstracts for fall meeting of the Japanese Society for Planetary Science, 2005 24-24, 2005We performed N (10 micron) and Q-band (20 micron) observations of 25143 Itokawa at the ESO La Silla 3.6m telescope with TIMMI2. At last apparition in 2001, Sekiguchi et al. (2003) derived its size and geometric albedo from STM analysis. Our new data in July 2004, in combination with already published data, allowed us to de-termine a radiometric effective diameter of 0.32+/-0.03km and an albedo of 0.19 +0.11/-0.03 through a Thermophysical Model. This effective diameter corresponds to 520 (+/-50) x 270 (+/-30) x 230 (+/-20) m based on the Kaasalainen et al.(2005) shape model with a lightcurve analysis using optical observations data. These re-sults are incompatible with them derived from radar observations in 15 % differ-ences. The obtained thermal inertia indicates a bare rock surface. The total mass of Itokawa was derived to be 4.5x10^10 kg from our results assuming the bulk density for S-type asteroids.

Abstracts for fall meeting of the Japanese Society for Planetary Science, 2005 38-38, 2005We present the results of photometric observations of the near-Earth asteroid 65803 Didymos (1996 GT) in 2003 and 2005. Didymos has a complex lightcurve consisting of mainly two independent components. It suggests that the two-body system as asynchronous binary displaying the mutual eclipse/occultation by the satellite. Although the taxonomic type was revealed an M-type from the reflectance spectrum and phase curve, the bulk density is estimated at 1.4 +/- 0.3 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP> by the analysis of the satellite orbit. This could indicate that Didymos is composed of, not metallic but, chondritic materials.

日本惑星科学会秋季講演会予稿集, 2003 39-28, Oct 8, 2003衝突クレーター形成過程において、サイズ等を支配するパラメーターが、標的が岩石等の場合は物質強度、標的がレゴリス等の場合は表面重力であることは様々な研究により明らかにされている。しかし、標的がレゴリスでかつ表面重力が微小な場合に、どのようなパラメターにより支配されるかは明らかでない。このような領域でのクレーター形成過程を定量的に明らかにすることは、小惑星の表面進化過程を研究するうえで重要である。今回我々は、落下カプセルを用いた微小重力環境下でのクレーター形成実験を行ったので、その結果を発表する。
