AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGY JAPAN, THE JAPAN SOCIETY FOR AERONAUTICAL AND SPACE SCIENCES, 12 1-8, 2013GaN HEMT has been expected to satisfy requirements being used in space as amplifying devices of future high-efficiency onboard SSPAs due to its excellent properties such as robustness in a harsh environment, applicability to high frequency and high power operation. However, in X-band, the most important frequency band for space communication at this moment, evaluation of GaN HEMT to prove the space usage has not been conducted yet because ensuring a steady supply of X-band GaN HEMT devices is still difficult due to current collapse phenomena. Therefore, in this research, evaluation of RF characteristics affected by operational conditions and space environmental testing of X-band HPA using COTS GaN HEMT was conducted to secure the space usage.

Journal of the Geodetic Society of Japan, 55(2) 307-314, Jul 25, 2009The electron density profiles above the lunar surface are being observed by the radio occultation technique during the mission using the Vstar and Rstar sub-satellites. In addition to a traditional technique which uses one orbiter, we are conducting another method which uses two orbiters with the second one being used to measure the terrestrial ionosphere contribution. Previous radio occultation measurements have indicated the existence of an ionosphere with densities of up to 1000 cm-3 above the dayside lunar surface. These densities are difficult to explain theoretically when the removal of plasma by the solar wind is considered, and thus the generation mechanism of the lunar ionosphere is a major issue, with even the validity of previous observations still under debate. The SELENE radio science experiment will establish the morphology of the lunar ionosphere and will reveal its relationship with various conditions to provide possible clues to the mechanism.

IEICE technical report, 111(7) 1-6, Apr 14, 2011Selenological and Engineering Explorer is composed of a lunar orbiter 'Kaguya', and two small sub-satellites: Relay Satellite 'Okina' and VRAD Satellite 'Ouna'. It was launched in September 2007, and operated until June 2009. Ground stations for their operations were GN stations of JAXA, Usuda Deep Space Center (UDSC), and foreign stations. Among them, 64m antenna of UDSC executed the downlink of mission data from Kaguya, and the first experiments of 4-way Doppler measurements of lunar orbiter relayed by Okina. We report about the outline of these operations, and the new technology to achieve the 4-way relay link.

IEICE technical report, 111(7) 13-17, Apr 14, 2011A 2.1 GHz 200W GaN high power amplifier unit with a solid-state cooling equipment was fabricated in compact configuration. The four high power amplifier units were combined with a circular waveguide and the output power was obtained with 540W. In the high power amplifier unit, the two package-type GaN amplifiers are connected in parallel. The maximum power of 200W was realized with the Peltier device for heat sink. The high power amplifier unit shows the PAE of more than 50% with the AB-class operation under the temperature around 40 degrees. The combining efficiency of the combiner was achieved with about 80 %.
