Japanese words which appeared in an English newspaper published in Hawaii were used to conduct a survey. The survey targeted local residents of Hawaii and how much they understood, used, and recognized Japanese words selected for the survey.

This paper considers the role of sociolinguistic knowledge and awareness as a component of intercultural competence, and discusses some of the aspects of sociolinguistic awareness which are particularly relevant within the Japanese context.
